Tip of the Week | 08/14/20
Hey everyone, I’m back for part 2 of our “Tip of the Week” series. I hope last week’s post was helpful to show that narrowing our focus to 3 tasks to do each day, gives clarity to know what needs to get done and what you think needs to get done. So, let’s get into week two of the Tip of the Week series.
Tip: Create a pre and post work ritual.
This tip, again, comes from Michael Hyatt1. I know I have two tips in a row from him, but I guess that shows how much valuable content he’s putting out. Oftentimes when I have a lot on my plate, it can be difficult to separate the different parts of my day. Creating rituals before and after the workday is like putting bookends on a shelf and tells your brain, “okay it’s time to switch gears to the next thing”. This was extremely helpful for me when I had to switch to online college at home during quarantine for COVID-19.
Because my environment was always the same (the house), I needed mental shifts to keep my focus on each task.
Something I did before each school day was: empty my email box, close down the apps on laptop I was currently not using, review my daily big 3 (see previous post on creating focused to-do lists), and set a timer (about 20 minutes of focused work, then 5 minutes of rest, and repeat).
Every day at the end of my school day I would: empty my email box again, review tomorrow and my weekly big 3 to-do’s, and put all of my work materials away. This may seem like a simple tip, but I promise it makes a world of difference in order to switch gears to the next task at hand. Give it a go this upcoming week and let us know if it helps. Make sure to come back next week for another weekly tip!
