Am I an Athlete or a Christian? Or Can I Be Both?
I am a dad of two boys who have thoroughly enjoyed sports. I enjoyed being an athlete as well during my younger teenage years. I was not a follower of Jesus in those days but I wonder if I would have been able to be an athlete and Christian at the same time.
My big question is can an athlete be a Christian? Can a Christian be an athlete? In today’s era of searching for a D1 school to be recruited from it seems like those are two separate things. It seems like you have to portray a certain image to the recruiters that goes against living the gospel centered life. What I mean by gospel centered life is that I find my identity in Jesus alone not in my latest highlight reel or the theme I have received in the newspapers. It is such a confusing time that we often confuse our identity with the latest newspaper article of our greatest feat in football. So how do you maintain identifying yourself by the gospel? How do you keep reminding yourself that you are accepted and valued because of who God made you to be and because of his Son, Jesus, rather than the last rep you have just executed on the field? I will answer that in my next post. Until then live as loved and stay hungry!
